Offering 8 separate products, The GreenPlan is a social enterprise that aims to tackle climate change through CSR and ESG certification. Based in Ireland, The Green Plan operates in more than 50 countries, making compliance more accessible, achievable and impactful.
The Problem and Focus
The local infrastructure across Ireland, and the EU, is both outdated and inefficient. Particularly, working within the trades as a firefighter, Neil recognized that fire stations have much more potential to model more sustainable practices. The amount of water and fuel they use to be in operation 24hrs a day, Neil saw an opportunity to transition into better practices. What began with an initiative to create the first carbon neutral fire station in the world, quickly expanded into something larger. Despite the climate crisis worsening, local government was (and is) slow to react. Communities, particularly those from poor and working classes communities, being deeply impacted, Neil recognized information was inaccessible, which was when he found himself in the position to expand his action. His vision was to create clear and methodological strategies and approaches to move towards more sustainable practices. With emphasis on sustainability, Neil identified the power of local procurement as the most effective entry point into the problem of wasteful energy consumption. Leveraging the fire station as an example for communities, Neil expanded his green initiatives into homes and institutions — conducting educational workshops on biodiversity and sustainable development.
The Impact
Neil’s impact goes far beyond fire stations in Dublin. His early grassroots work translated into system-wide change by proving the value of sustainability through tangible energy and cost savings. His strategy became the blueprint for Dublin City Council and the County of Dublin’s wider sustainability initiative. It was formally adopted into the Dublin Fire Brigade’s 5-year business plan and embedded in the city’s overarching Sustainability Plan. His methodology has since scaled nationally, across businesses, parks, hospitals, and libraries, and internationally, influencing policy within the Scottish Government. Neil’s leadership has garnered recognition at the highest levels. He was called to advise the British Parliament on sustainability matters at the EU level, uniquely positioning him as an influential figure both nationally and across Europe. His role in shaping climate strategy has been further recognized through a special sitting involving the Provost and three Presidents of universities in Ireland, as well as the four Mayors of Dublin and the City and County Managers of Dublin’s local authorities. The group convened to address mitigation for climate change employment and enterprise. In addition, Neil is currently serving his second term as Entrepreneurial Ambassador with TU Dublin, where he continues to stimulate innovation and green shoots in business development. He also serves as head adjudicator at high-stakes Hackathons and Business Finance competitions, helping shape the next generation of climate-conscious entrepreneurs.
